Abstract
EDUCATION TOWARDS WITNESS AS AN AIM OF CATECHESIS 1. THE AIM OF THE STUDY The purpose of this investigation was to determine, on consideration of data from the New Testament, whether education towards witness is an aim of church catechesis, and if found to be such, to determine the meaning thereof for catechesis practice. 2. AN OUTLINE OF THE STUDY The concepts of education, witness and testimony were elucidated in chapters two to four. Chapter five involved a study of John 1:1-13, with a view to providing Scriptural grounds for religious choice. In the final chapter guidelines for the practice of education towards witness were suggested. 3. CONCLUSIONS 3.1 THE RELATION EDUCATION, WITNESS AND TESTIMONY The investigation revealed that witness and testimony are two aspects of education towards witness. Education towards witness should aim to accompany the confirmand towards accepting God's witness in faith and towards living in fellowship with God and the congregation. The confirmand will thus become mature in faith; he will be 186 able to bear testimony to Christ and also educate others. 3.2 ACCOMPANIMENT TOWARDS CHOOSING RELIGIOUS OPTIONS The investigation repeatedly revealed that the confirmand should be accompanied to choose Christ against Satan. A study of John 1:1-13 brought to light that religious choice is scripturally accountable. 3.3 PRACTICAL GUIDELINES FDR EDUCATION TOWARDS WITNESS Practical guidelines regarding the subject, object, nature, aim, curriculum and method of education towards witness were indicated. The foundation on which the practice of education towards witness is build, is God's revelation of Himself through Jesus Christ and the workings of the Holy Spirit, and transmission of this knowledge by people who have accepted God's testimony. 3.4 CONCLUSION The study concluded that education towards witness should be part of all church education. Education towards witness enriches education and contributes to the realisation of the aim of church catechesis.
