Die verband tussen vorm en inhoud in die vertaling van kreatiewe tekste : Lewis Carroll se "Jabberwocky"
Abstract
In this research project two Afrikaans translations of Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" were
compared with each other as well as with the source text to determine the extent to which
translation equivalence is achieved. For a wider application result a German and three
Dutch translations were also included in the study.
The translations were assessed for translation equivalence using the theoretical concept
of equivalence in its widest possible sense, including the various levels of equivalence.
The results of the analysis make it possible to draw conclusions as to the process of meaning
assignment in a nonsense text. It particularly emphasises the intricate yet meaningful
and functional relationship between form and content. It is argued that form and content
constitute an inseparable bond in the nonsense text where concepts are often closely related
to particular words or formulas.
