    Abstract
The topic of this study is: A pastoral investigation into the way spiritual and emotional recovery is constructed in contemporary models of inner healing. The ultimate aim of the study is the formulation of innovating insights and guidelines for the pastoral guidance of emotionally and spiritually wounded persons from the perspective of inner healing. In the section that starts in chapter 2, the pastoral-theological method of Osmer serves as point of departure. Following this method, the focus is first on the normative task by reflecting on seven contemporary models of inner healing. Within the same section, chapter 3 formulates a Scriptural basis for the theme of inner healing and determines the extent to which principles of the different models of inner healing remain true to the requirements of Scripture. Moving on to the Interpretative task, chapter 4 focuses on supplementary guidelines regarding principles of inner healing as derived from the neighbouring sciences. The chapter shows that, amongst other things, deeply-suppressed emotional pain may result in certain physical problems and may also suppress the immune system. Emotional freedom or bondage are also shown to be, to a large extent, determined by factors such as dysfunctional patterns of behaviour, traumatic dreams, confronting the past, stopping compulsive behaviour, offering/receiving forgiveness and focussing on positive aspects such as past strengths and achievements. In chapter 5, as part of the Descriptive empirical task, the results of three case studies are discussed. During prayer sessions and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, a ‘move backward’ toward the original traumatic situation was as it were undertaken with the counselled. Informative observations regarding emotional and spiritual healing as experienced by the counselled were made during these sessions. In chapter 6, addressing the Pragmatic task, practice-theoretical guidelines applicable to the formulation of an own model of inner healing are offered. The proposed model consists of six phases to which prayer session is at the centre.
