Spatial configuration as narrative technique in Danie Marais's In die buitenste ruimte (In outer space, 2006) Danie Marais's debut poetry collection, entitled In die buitenste ruimte (In outer space), tells the story of alienation and displacement in a foreign country and in a disintegrating marriage. This article investigates the manner in which the above-mentioned narrative is represented in the collection, as well as the unique way in which Danie Marais uses and exploits narrative characteristics in his lyric poetry in order to establish and support the poetic nature of his poems. On the poetic level, Marais's poems are characterised by an organic approach much like in the work of the so-called Beat-generation. Individual characteristics of the Beat-literature will therefore be discussed and compared with Marais's verse. On the narrative level, it is especially spatial discourse that is applied as a narrative technique in the collection. Johan Schimanski and Stephan Wolfe's poetics of boundaries (2007, 2009) serve as the framework for the investigation into the manifestation of boundaries and the violation of these boundaries in the poems. Topographical, symbolic and temporal boundaries are differentiated and discussed in the analyses of individual poems.
