    Abstract
This paper investigates the use of the names Israel, Ephraim and Jacob in the book of Hosea, looking at a possible relationship between the different traditions that are used in the book and the use of these three names. In the discussion three groups of traditions are distinguished: those related to the exodus, the sojourn in the desert and the conquest; those related to the patriarch Jacob (especially in Hosea 12); and other traditions related to the Pentateuch.
