Editorial
At Your Service
The editorial office of Yesterday and Today has moved to Stellenbosch. The unexpected decision to close Goudstad Onderwyskollege resulted in the termination of the editorial combination of the Rand Afrikaans University and GOK. Because of the conviction of the founders of the journal that it must represent a joint effort, it was necessary to find a new partnership of university and college to ensure that both secondary and primary education will be served by the journal. We trust that the combination of the history and didactics departments of the university and the college with its integrated course that deals with the content and reaching methods in one department, will serve the interests of history. An editorial board representing teachers from a variety of schools and education authorities will ensure a representative effort aimed at accommodating the major interest groups.
The life blood of any journal are its contributors and subscribers. It is therefore essential that history teachers should participate in providing copy for the bi-annual editions. Please do not hesitate to supply us with contributions from pupils and staff members on issues that are of interest to them.
Geskiedenis as skoolvak bevind hom in 'n moeilike posisie. Dit is net diegene wat as onderwysers en dosente regstreeks met die vak gemoeid is, wat kan verseker dat die vak die probleme waarmee hy tans gekonfronteer word, suksesvol kan hanteer. Vernuwing van inhoud en onderrig is noodsaaklik sodat die vak sy rol kan vervul om as basis van leerlinge se mensgeletterdheid hulle toe te rus om die komplekse probleme van die veranderende wêreld en die omwentelende Suid-Afrika te hanteer.
Ewewigtigheid van denke, verhewenheid van doelstellings en die vermoë om bo die daaglikse en tydelike problematiek uit te styg, is vereistes waaraan die vak en die onderwyser sal moet voldoen. Daarvoor is 'n forum nodig waar openhartige en indringende gesprek gerig op die praktiese behoeftes van die onderwyser in die klaskamer kan plaasvind. Gister en Vandag wil en kan daardie funksie vervul.
Onderwysers, leerlinge en belangstellendes word daarom genooi om aktiewe medewerkers te word. Stuur u en u leerlinge se bydraes en dra so daartoe by om die dinamiese aard van u vak en onderrig verder uit te dra.
As gevolg van vertragings met die verskuiwing verskyn hierdie uitgawe later as wat dit moet verskyn. Ons bied ons verskoning daarvoor aan.
