dc.description.abstract | The role of the organist in the postmodern, contemporary Dutch Reformed Church has changed
dramatically during the past 50 years as a result of the paradigm shift in the liturgy and liturgical music
of the church. The traditional organ music and hymns from Liedboek van die kerk may be supplanted
by contemporary songs, often accompanied by a band. Various spiritual styles are regularly used side
by side while the present day organist needs to master the old and new, classical and contemporary.

These changes in liturgical music present a widespread challenge to the conscientious postmodern
organist to be with or without a band, “all things to all people” as far as church music goes. Research
has shown that the organ is still the instrument of choice for 90% of clergymen and congregations,
but drastic changes are sometimes needed insofar as choice of music, choosing of hymns and musical
accompaniment goes to satisfy the need of postmodern congregations.
This presents a new and exciting challenge to all organists: to keep and preserve the standard and
love of good organ music. Research has proved that effective organ-playing is entering a new phase of
adequately providing the specific demands of the postmodern worship styles. The necessary mindshift
of the organist and the knowledge needed to succeed will be attained by continuous study and above
all, the correct attitude of the organist: to be in the privileged position of working for the Lord’s
congregation. | en_US |
